Being Apart of the Dream
By: Kiana Shaffer
This room is silent but it’s filled with lots of eager students. The teacher is inspiring when he tells you of his culture and life experiences. I have been going to this school now for two years and this was the first time I felt like I belonged. It didn’t matter that it was a two day a week class, it felt like we were a family. The famous people of our past like Laurent Clerc and Abbe De l’Eppe, I wonder if this was how they imagined their dream. This was the picture: 11 hearing students and 1 deaf teacher teaching us American Sign Language. This is the present and this is just one room, just imagine what will this dream will be like in 10 years. It’s still quiet but you have to actually walk into this room to see the smiling faces the giving of emotions. The hands move in a way that can express just the way you’re feeling. Don’t judge because that’s not what were about! Were about introducing two cultures and combining them in a way where no one is oppressed. Take a look I bet you it’s not what you expected because I can’t even describe how each sign changes your view. It’s like the light at the end of the tunnel.
