The Forgotten Photo
By: Kiana Shaffer
The angry anonymous phone call rings
No more silence as the babbling begins
It started out courageous and complicated
But disaster struck as the damsel
Said ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!
I fixated on the frightening background noise
It was generous and full of grief
My senses heightened to hear what’s next
Was this man an imposter or was I?
Just as I judged I knew the voice
The key turned in the kitchen door
Light laughter rose from behind the door
Motionless I stood, Moments slipped away
Nightmares became noticeable as the door crept open
Like opposites we stood oblivious
I peered into the painful brown eyes
The phone fell quietly from my quivering hands
Realizing my fate I ran to grab the photo
Strong was I as he struggled to pull it from my hands
I was tempted to tell him the truth
An understanding was undecided
Discovering his vicious vendetta
I woke weeping wishing the picture was real
X marked the spot of a love that excided any expectations
Years have gone by but the memories of yesterday still haunt my dreams
Zero regrets I have, for I have zoned off into another reality
