Writer's Statement:
I really like this quote it explains why I like to write. I dont write for anyone and sometimes my work doesnt have a point. It just makes me feel like I'm in power to rewrite life events or explain a hard situation. Hope you enjoy my writing.

“To defend what you’ve written is a sign that you are alive.”
—William Zinsser, WD

Writer's Journal Excerpts:

I didn't use my journal as you usually do but again is there a normal way to use a journal? I used it as a thought generator I would write down things I overheard, quotes I liked, a dream I had, or a sentence that would come to me. I would also write my to do lists in them or draw some pictures. Sometimes it would turn into a drama fest of me just complaining and things I was worried about that week. It was always good to revisit what I had wrote about and then build off of it. I call it my foundational thoughts journal, I actually was pretty successful with a few pieces from my journal. Every artist needs a blank canvas to practice on and so does a writer, I think this was a great tool and all writers should use them to their full potential.

  • Make your story come alive, sign it like you have never before, today you are in charge, make your mind turn off.
  • How do I love someone who doesnt love me back??
  • When someone walks careless back into your life remember who you are!
  • Why do the little things bother us? It's that image that we refer to back to time and time again.Time to change it.
  • I have always wanted to go to the moon!
  • Adjust your lens and make sure you see the big picture.
Revision Choices:

I think revision is about finding what works and making it work better. I realize that some of my pieces of writing are better then some but I think its about what you take away from it. I think I was very successful when it came to design elements of the revision process. The writing I think what I did good was add on to the story find those parts that were missing and add more depth into the story like for example Frozen Survival. I also looked at sentence fluency and took out a lot of commas and made some of my sentences longer or shorter which ever was needed. Some of the challenges I struggled with was liking a piece to much that I didn't want to do anything with it like the It's Time to Begin poem. It was also hard to choose the 8 pieces to put in the portfolio, I wanted all of them to show how different I could be as a writer. Some pieces I felt like I didn't grow as a writer and others I was astonished that it was the first piece of writing I ever wrote in that class like the poem The Forgotten Photo. What I focused on the most was doing the best I could and I think my revision choices reflects this motto.

Catnip puts on a confident face but she knows that this challenge is mentally and physically challenging, and most people puke and pass out in the first few hours! People from other districts seek out the competition, some think catnip will win because she is a twig and can afford to eat a lot, while people in 1st district are plump and have plenty of experience eating fatty foods.

Hold On

It’s said that when we see someone that catches our eyes we radiate towards them like magnets. I float across the room and gently step down, you grab my hand and all that we have in common at that point is our great smiles. You mouth begins to form the words “hello, whats your name” and then like a loud crash a gun goes off and I collapse to the ground.

Being Apart of the Dream

It’s still quiet but you have to actually walk into this room to see the smiling faces the giving of emotions. The hands move in a way that can express just the way you’re feeling. Don’t judge because that’s not what were about! Were about introducing two cultures and combining them in a way where no one is oppressed.

 Letter to Grandpa

By: Kiana Shaffer

Today is the day that you left us 11 years ago. You left grandma, your daughters; you left me without a chance to say that “I LOVE YOU”! I always wonder if you meant to leave us or did someone higher than us give you a choice?

Frozen Survival

I had gone skiing by myself two days before I think, and taken an unfamiliar path through the trees. My memory was so fuzzy and I wished someone had found me by now. I was going to stand and start moving to see if I could find a road, but as soon as I stood up I remembered what the real problem was

Love is Like a Circus

Out of the corner of my eye I saw a guy staring at my sister from across the ring. He looked like he was in a trance as he looked at my sister and her golden strawberry blonde hair with her blue eyes and dress. It was like he had the power to slow down time as he looked at us, when they locked eyes I bumped into the back of my sister.

It's Time to Begin

At the bottom of the pit is where we start

The clouds cover it and no sunshine shows

Just like how you don’t show yourself your problems

You hide underneath the dirt like it’s going to protect you
